Griffith Malayalees Onam 2025

Griffith Malayalees Onam 2025

What is Onam?
Onam is the biggest and most joyful festival of Kerala, a beautiful state in South India. It is a harvest festival that celebrates natureโ€™s abundance and the legendary story of King Mahabali, whose rule is remembered as a time of peace, prosperity and equality.

Why do we celebrate?
For Malayalees (people from Kerala), Onam is more than just a festival โ€“ itโ€™s a time of togetherness. Families and friends come together to create colourful flower decorations (Pookkalam), enjoy traditional music and dance, wear festive attire, and share a grand vegetarian feast called the Onam Sadhya.

By celebrating Onam here in Griffith, we wish to share this tradition with our wider Australian community โ€“ showcasing culture, food, art, and the warmth of Malayalee hospitality. Itโ€™s a celebration where everyone is welcome.
