Griffith Malayalees Onam 2025

Griffith Malayalees Onam 2025 โ€“ A Celebration of Togetherness and Tradition

As the flowers bloom in Kerala during the Chingam month, so do the hearts of Malayalees across the globe and here in Griffith, NSW, we are no different.
Onam is not just a festival, itโ€™s a feeling. One that brings our community together, bridging distances and creating memories that last a lifetime.

This year, the joy of Onam will come alive once again, thanks to the enthusiastic efforts of the Griffith Sports Club & Fitness group. Known for organising regular badminton practice sessions for Malayalees and other Indian community members in Griffith, this group has been a hub for friendship, health, and togetherness. What started as friendly badminton matches has turned into a vibrant community space, where even those from towns hours away travel just to be part of the fun.

It is with this same spirit of inclusiveness and warmth that we now gather for Griffith Malayalees Onam 2025.

๐ŸŒผ Highlights of the Day

1. Pookalam / Athakalam

No Onam is complete without the vibrant floral carpet that welcomes King Mahabali. Guests will work together in the morning to create an intricate, colourful pookalam at the entrance of the hall, a true team effort that symbolises unity and beauty. Whether youโ€™ve arranged flowers before or not, this is a joyful experience where laughter and creativity flow as freely as the petals.

2. Cultural Performances

The stage will be lit with performances by both children and adults from within our own community. Expect dances, songs, skits, and more. Each act a small piece of home brought to life here in Griffith. If you wish to perform, please let us know at least 1โ€“2 days before the event so we can finalise the schedule and make sure your audio or other media files are ready.

3. Traditional Onam Sadhya

Prepared by a professional catering team, the Onam Sadhya will be a lavish vegetarian feast served on banana leaves. From parippu and sambar to avial, thoran, olan, and payasam, every dish will be crafted to bring the authentic taste of Kerala to your plate. The Sadhya is not just about food, itโ€™s about sitting together, sharing stories, and relishing tradition bite by bite.

4. Lucky Dip / Thambola

Add a little excitement to the afternoon with our raffle games. Fun, laughter, and the thrill of winning gifts await. Tickets will be sold on the day, so please bring cash as the venueโ€™s low network coverage may make online payments difficult.

๐Ÿ’› The Heart of the Celebration

Onam is about more than just tradition, itโ€™s about community. For many of us, these gatherings are the few times in the year when we can introduce our families to one another, share laughter over familiar dishes, and feel the warmth of belonging. In a town far from Kerala, Onam becomes a bridge to our roots, and a celebration that our children will remember and carry forward.
